Quote of the week
“Cloud is about how you do computing, not where you do computing.” –Paul Maritz, VMware CEO
Hello,
It has been quiet here for two weeks, sorry about that. But, I took ad notam the Plato quote from the last newsletter: “Wise men talk because they have something to say; fools, because they have to say something.” I am preparing for an interesting theme (hopefully) and in the meantime I share with you some of my Sunday breakfast reading (24 March). I received the monthly, free magazine ‘Galore Weekend’ and found a few interesting things. Among them statistics on ‘Data in the cloud’. I think that is something that concerns all of us.
The Cloud
About 90% of all the data in the world has been created during the last two years. Sounds incredible, but I guess computerasation has increased during this time as well.
The places with the most digital infra structure
Cities or regions with the highest data centre capacities in megawatt (2022).
North Virginia (2 552)
Peking (1 799)
London (1 053)
Singapore (876)
Tokyo (865)
Frankfurt (864)
Shanghai (725)
Sydney (667)
It is certainly spread all over the world. Does anyone know why North Virginia is such a hotspot? Because of Washington D.C.? Other governmental offices?
What do we save in the cloud?
This survey was done in the USA to private persons with cloud services, where the most popular clouds were Google Drive 40% and iCloud 33%.
Pictures (71%)
Backups (53%)
Music/Films (41%)
Documents (35%)
Passwords (21%)
Economy (18%)
As for me, I save pictures, documents and economy. I guess I should do some backups, but rely on other apps to keep me safe. What do you save in the cloud?
Content creators who earned the most in 2023
Youtube seems to be a great way to earn money, if you are good. During the last years around 500 hours of film has been uploaded on Youtube every minute, 24/7. That means 720 000 hours of content per 24 hours. It is almost incomprehensible. I am also a big consumer of youtube videos. There is always something for every one, whatever interest you have.
The most successful content creation is MrBeast (Jimmy Donaldson) who earned 82 million dollars. He has over 300 million followers, quite unbelievable. He is earning far above the second place of 35 million dollars, going down(!) to 21 million dollars for the least earner on this list. I think we might have chosen the wrong career? I must admit that I am not familiar with any on this list. Do you know any of them, and are you following any of them?

Travel guides
When you are travelling it is really good to have a phone, iPad or similar to find information on the places you visit. That usually means that you also get the latest version of the information. The magazine has listed six of the most visited monuments in the world. Number of visits (millions) in brackets. They are:
Notre-Dame de Paris (12). I guess it is quite another experience to visit the dome these days, after the fire.
The Chinese Wall (9)
The Opera house in Sydney (7,4)
The Eiffel Tower (6,7)
The Lincoln Monument (5)
The Colosseum (5)
Have you visited any of them? I have been to Notre-Dame, Chinese wall, Eiffel Tower and Colosseum. Great monuments and I hope to visit the other two one day.
That was a little bit of easy going statistics on a quiet, Sunday morning. Hope you have had a relaxing weekend. If you feel like reading a little bit more, you can visit my book blog, where I have two reviews of two fantastic books I read recently.
The Sailor Who Fell from Grace with the Sea by Yukio Mishima
Un été avec Homère (A Summer with Homer) by Sylvain Tesson
See you soon.
This is interesting, Lisbeth. I've not yet used on-siite cloud/web services when traveling abroad but next time I go I will have the right phone and will do that. I know I must have a lot up on the cloud but I have no idea how to get most of it!
Jag bläddrade också i Galore weekend. Finns en del intressant. Konesiska miren buyer kag ut mot Sydney operahouse. I övrogt har vi sett detsamma. Glad påsk 🐣
